Some of us are miserable because they are not God

by zoss in introflection, repost
You’re trapped, you say,
in a miserable Today;
Between the complete uncertainty
of your Tomorrow,
and the unwavering determinacy
of Yesterday.

And, I hear you …
                  But!
                      Say
I change it such that:
You know everything about the future,
and can alter anything about the past;
What happiness would that bring -or torture-
about your present state?
                           If naught,
then you      -my friend-
are             -like me-
destined to be
               -eternally-
miserable!

For neither of us is God!
                          –And,
Nothing …
Nothing, will change that!

absolute gem

A collection of all of sharawy’s reflections (in arabic) on the language of the quran in real audio format. They used to have an advertisement that they would send an mp3 dvd for free (to any address in north america, and only for shipping costs otherwise), but I guess they’ve taken it down (after I got mine)…

The Satanic Verses

by: Salman Rushdie

A man who sets out to make himself up is taking on the Creator’s role, according to one way of seeing things; he’s unnatural, a blasphemer, an abomination of abominations. From another angle, you could see pathos in him, heroism in his struggle, in his willingness to risk: not all mutants survive. Or, consider him sociopolitically: most migrants learn, and can become disguises. Our own false descriptions to counter the falsehoods invented about us, concealing for reasons of security our secret selves.

A man who Invents himself needs someone to believe in him, to prove he’s managed it. Playing God again, you could say. Or you could come down a few notches, and think of Tinkerbell; fairies don’t exist if children don’t clap their hands. Or you might simply say: it’s just like being a man.

Not only the need to be believed in, but to believe in another. You’ve got it: Love.

why dear! likely all flesh is contextual.

see my words, contextually, as you would extended arms flailing in the air; if you follow them like you would an officer organizing traffic, you would no doubt get into an accident (or at the least end-up somewhere you did not want to go); but if you sit at the edge of your seat, and watch them intently with your eyes wide open and heart popping from excitement with every movement, like a child would a man on the rope in the circus, then maybe you’ll experience feelings you haven’t before, you’ll have fun, and perhaps learn a thing or two about balance.

Q: Is physical appearance an important factor in your choice of a future life partner?
A: Yes; very much so; It is really important that my future life partner has a physical appearance!

surfin’ news?

by zoss in surfin, repost

What the media portray, like one of those fairground mirrors, is a grotesque species that murders, squabbles, bullies and dies. What gets omitted is the extraordinary ordinariness that keeps people getting up in the morning; the humour, innocence, generosity, love and friendship - the very human characteristics that might begin to inspire more confidence in our ability to alleviate, rather than simply know about, the suffering of others.

Four seasons;

Desperation,
inspiration,
hope,
and sour grapes.

Cyclic dreams and reasons;

Fluctuation,
oscillation;
Tide flows,
and ebbs.

How many more eons?
(It’s only natural-
I know,
but,
for how many more eons?)

The soul tires, but not Love.
The soul tires, but not from Love.
Isn’t this reason enough,
to love thee, Love?

surfin for commentary on climate science

by zoss in surfin, scienza, repost

Adding to the list of scientists who care about how their science is discussed in main-stream media; nine climate scientists decided to create (the blog) RealClimate:

RealClimate is a commentary site on climate science by working climate scientists for the interested public and journalists. We aim to provide a quick response to developing stories and provide the context sometimes missing in mainstream commentary. The discussion here is restricted to scientific topics and will not get involved in any political or economic implications of the science.
